It will not be long before the sunnier weather returns to our shores so do make sure your skin is protected and ready to enjoy it. Wherever there is light there are dangers from UVA; so, in addition to getting your skin in great condition (to bare with confidence in the sunshine), you need to do it safely!

The question of sun protection has risen, just like the sun, with scientific exposure of some of the main ingredients in SPF’s as cancerous.

According to Cancer Research UK, cases of skin cancer have risen to their current figures which are five times higher than what they were during the mid 1970’s.

Here is the report from the BBC

First, some important information on popular sunscreens – ones that you are used to seeing in the high street stores.

How SPF(sun protection factor) works:

SPF sunscreens work by reflecting the direct sunlight off your skin. Titanium dioxide or zinc dioxide, used in tiny fragments, essentially act as a mirror to UVB rays in order to fend off any surface skin burn that may otherwise occur.

However, titanium dioxide is an active ingredient and has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen ”possibly carcinogenic to humans” The pandemic level of skin cancer has made many rethink what is causing all the damage, which has led to more understanding of UV light.

To give you an idea of how toxic titanium dioxide is, it is also used as a pigment to provide whiteness and opacity to paints, plastics, paper and ink. When this is used in your sunscreen, it has to be coated with silica or alumina (even more chemicals), as it creates radicals which are carcinogenic and could damage the skin.

Titanium dioxide has also been proven to have a definite link to skin irritation, prickly heat and rosacea.

When you apply an SPF product, therefore not feeling the physical effects of sunburn, you are lured into a false sense of security to stay in the sun for long periods of time. However, in this time you are exposing your skin to absorbing a high degree of UVA – more on this later.

SPF’s can also stop your skin absorbing vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones, supporting the immune system, protecting against dementia, excess fat loss and anti-cancer properties.

N.B. There are no SPF’s in the products in this range.

To explain further….

There are 3 types of UV rays; UVA, UVB and UVC.

UVC is completely absorbed by the ozone layer and atmosphere; insofar as skincare is concerned, you do not need to worry about UVC. If it broke through the atmosphere then we would all melt! UVC is an important factor in global warming, but we’re not here to talk about that.

UVB causes the surface skinburn we get and this is what SPF’s reflect (as explained above, titanium or zinc dioxide are used as the reflection ingredient). Whilst skin surface burns are sore and not a good look, they are not as damaging as it was first thought. The skin sheds a layer every 28-45 days, so when you get burnt in this way, you are burning the very top layers and you will naturally lose this skin. So, as long as you are not exposing sunburn to the sun day after day, this should not cause any lasting damage – UVB rays can only get to the skin if you are in direct sunlight.

UVA is the hidden danger.

The stealth UVA is present where there is light..all year round; it penetrates our skin through glass, reflective glass and water. Even when you are in the shade or behind a window you are not protected. It is now seen as the cause of the worst form of skin cancer and most SPF sunscreens will not protect you from it. This is a huge concern as many people do not realise this…they do not know it is happening – or why! People who have always worn SPF protection or who have never exposed themselves to the sun for long periods of time have been diagnosed with this dreadful disease.

UVA rays cannot be bounced back. UVA damage is not immediately visible to the eye. The worst thing is that it reaches the deep layers of the dermis close to nerves and glands and mutates cells as they are being formed in the lower dermis.

The less serious affect caused by UVA is premature ageing.

So……… what can you do?

Natural vital oils neutralise UVA light – a little like electricity coming into contact with rubber. If you have natural oil on the skin then any UVA is neutralised.

Thus, in these products you have the perfect natural alternative to those full of chemicals, which cause more damage than good.

The Ultra-Sensitive Body Oil has been developed using oils to neutralise any UVA rays and suitable for even the most sensitive skin. It also helps protect against UVB as the oils naturally speed up the skins own defence to these rays by encouraging the melanin to react quicker.

Research revealed in 2013 that it is through melanin that animals are able to survive in the sun. Their skin or shell contains high levels of melanin and that, in itself, acts as a protection.

That is not the only advantage! Along with being free from chemicals, parabens and synthetic perfumes – so are perfect for sensitive skin – the oils are massively moisturising and protective – a real anti-ageing benefit!

But isn’t oil dangerous?

In a word: No – oils are far less dangerous than they are often portrayed in the media.

If you imagine you are frying chicken pieces, you put oil in the pan to stop the heat burning the outside of the chicken before the inside is thoroughly cooked. So, this is what the oil does; it allows your skin to absorb the heat slowly whilst neutralising any harsh UVA rays and encouraging your skin to protect itself against UVB, naturally.

But remember:-

No sun protection makes it safe to sit in the sun for hours on end. We recommend if you are sunbathing then you do so for maximum of an hour at a time, allowing your skin to recover in between, and avoid the mid-day sunlight.

Also remember to re-apply your oil every time you go back into the sun and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

If you are careful not to get burnt in the early days of subjecting yourself to sunlight, you will get a super tan which lasts a long time.
